OWASSO, Oklahoma –
Fire crews and the sheriff have been surveying tornado damage throughout the morning in Owasso’s storm-toss neighborhoods.
Several people were hurt as severe storms dropped tornadoes in northeast Oklahoma, moving from north Tulsa to Owasso, on to Catoosa, Verdigris and Claremore.
People are getting a better look Thursday at the damage the tornado caused in Stone Canyon and Ridgeview Estates. Those are just off of 76th street North in Owasso, in Rogers County. Several homes in two neighborhoods have damage.
There is roof damage, fence damage and many uprooted trees. Crews are already on site trying to clean up from the storm.
Michael Ellis’ home in Ridgeview Estates has heavy damage. Six family members, including Ellis’ young grandson, rode out the storm in their storm shelter.
“We felt it. The whole house sort of shook a little bit. You could hear what eventually it was, and I was hoping it wasn’t. I was hoping it was hail hitting the roof, but it was boards being ripped off, you know,” Ellis said.
Several homes under construction in the Stone Canyon neighborhood also have significant damage – one that was flattened. Bricks were about to be laid, but now the house is now a pile of wood and shingles.
The roof is ripped apart in several places, and a second story window is now sitting in the mud.
The builder came out Thursday and said he’d never seen anything like it. As the tornado came through, he said he had no thought that his crews’ hard work would be swept away.
“Looking at this right now, just showing up and looking at all these houses – it’s bad,” he said.
No injuries have been reported in Owasso.
