A mass text notification telling Johnson County residents of a tornado warning on Wednesday afternoon was in error, according to authorities.
About 5:20 p.m., subscribers to Johnson County’s Notify JoCo emergency information system received the message warning of possible tornadoes.
However, that message was apparently in error.
There is no tornado warning issued for Johnson County, Kan., according to the National Weather Service. The confusion may have stemmed from a tornado warning that was issued in Johnson County, Texas.
There is a thunderstorm watch active to the west and northwest of Kansas City on Wednesday night until 9 p.m.
The Notify JoCo system sent a correction message minutes after the mistake.
“We are investigating the reason for the previous error message,” it read in part.
