Homes were damaged and trees uprooted in Leduc in the wake of what police say was possibly a tornado touching down early Saturday afternoon.
Leduc RCMP say at 3:35 p.m. they responded to a call of a possible small tornado near Highway 2 and 54 Street in the Willow Park Estates residential area.
The storm caused damage to residential properties and vehicles and uprooted several trees. Residents in the area were contacted and no injuries were reported but the City of Leduc public works and Leduc Fire Services were called in to help remove debris and prevent road hazards.
No confirmation has been given to the nature of the storm or whether a tornado or even strong winds caused the damage.
The Weather Network was reporting at 7:30 p.m. that most of the Prairie region should expect thunderstorms, with potential for torrential downpours, strong winds, hail and funnel clouds.
The agency noted that severe storms rolled through central and northwestern parts of Alberta on Saturday afternoon.
“Conditions will be favorable for the development of funnel clouds today,” the agency reports. “These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak land spout tornado.”
