DEERWOOD, Minn. – The National Weather Service confirms an EF2 tornado touched down near Deerwood Sunday evening.

The tornado, packing winds of 120 mph, formed two miles south-southwest of Deerwood and traveled southeast to Highway 6, causing extensive damage at Camp Arrowhead. Of the 21 buildings on its campus, 17 were damaged and four were destroyed.

“When I first got here I was close to tears because it was so bad,” said Al Admundson . “You couldn’t see anything from where you were standing down there. I was devastated at what I saw. From then on you couldn’t get any place. You had to crawl over, under and through trees to get through.”

Typically, camp volunteers are busy cleaning buildings and doing yard work around the grounds. This year, they are busy tearing buildings down and rebuilding them.

“We will have some limited use of the buildings,” said Admundson.Camp leaders and organizers say they are determined to open camp on time this year.
