A least three tornadoes have been confirmed following a series of storms that tore across eastern Iowa Sunday morning.
An EF2 tornado hit the town of Vinton early Sunday morning, bringing winds as high as 135 mph that left substantial damage in the town, the National Weather Service said. The tornado brought down a cell tower and ripped the roofs off several buildings, according to KCRG.com.
The NWS also confirmed tornado damage in Jackson and Scott counties. An EF1 with maximum winds of 100 mph was in progress in southern Andrew, leaving structural damage but no injuries, according to KWWL.com. The EF0 tornado produced winds as high as 80 mph in Park View.
A man was reportedly rescued from beneath the rubble of his flattened home in Walford, Iowa, early Sunday morning and several other homes in the area received severe wind damage, according to a Twitter post by KCRG.
Brett Gioimo, 27, found himself trapped after strong winds caused his house to collapse, KCRG reported. After being freed by firefighters, Gioimo was transported to the hospital, where he was treated for injuries. He is expected to make a full recovery.
The fire department told KCRG that Ashlee Shill, 28, and two children ages 3 and 4 were able to get out on their own accord. Shill and the children were also transported to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.
