WYOMING – Pinery Park has reopened after a cleanup effort to remove trees downed during a tornado last month.

The park reopened Sept. 16, almost a month after a tornado damaged the park on Aug. 20. The 75-acre park is located at 2301 De Hoop Ave. SW.

Rebecca Rynbrandt, the city’s director of community services, said the tornado destroyed more than 50 trees and damaged Little League fields, including fences and a scoreboard.

She said the fallen trees had to be removed along with hanging limbs. City staff as well as contractors and volunteers cleaned up the damage.

She estimated the cleanup costs to be more than $75,000.

Pinery Park is the second Wyoming park in the last two years to have substantial damage from a tornado. In September 2014, Ideal Park lost 98 percent of its tree canopy to tornado damage.

Cleanup costs for Ideal Park totaled more than $420,000, with the city seeking a state Department of Natural Resources grant for $300,000 to continue to help restore the park. Ideal Park is located on about 92 acres at 5900 Crippen Ave. SW.
