An EF-1 tornado hit parts of north Alabama on Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, storm survey crews visited Cullman County today and provided additional details about the Saturday storm.

The NWS said the crews discovered an EF-1 tornado with 100 miles-per-hour winds hit the Jones Chapel area of the county yesterday evening.

The tornado’s path covered a little more than four miles, and started at approximately 5:40 p.m. Saturday in Jones Chapel. It ended 15 minutes later in the Jones Valley area.

Crews reported the tornado began near the intersection of County Road 1043 and County Road 1047, where a farm house sustained roof damage. The storm moved toward CR 1043 and uprooted several trees before damaging another farm house west of the roadway. South of Jones Chapel, crews spotted several severely damaged chicken houses. The tornado dissipated near CR 991.

Crews classified the tornado on the Enhanced Fujita scale, which is used to measure tornados, as an EF-1 storm. On the scale, an EF-1 is described as “weak,” with an EF-5 being the worst storm measurable.

The Battleground community of Cullman County also suffered storm damage, and crews estimated winds reached 105 mph in the area. That event happened at approximately 5:40 p.m. near CR 1082 and CR 1055. The NWS said two barns were completely destoryed by the strong winds, and several trees were damaged.
