There was an unscheduled arrival at the Atlanta airport last night.
The National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Ga., has confirmed that a tornado touched down on Thursday night at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in metro Atlanta.
The EF-0 tornado had top winds of 75-85 mph, but that was enough to toss around several cargo bins that weighed up to 500 pounds, according to the weather service. Some of them ended up on top of a building about 60 feet off the ground.
And the tornado’s path had starting and end points you don’t see often — both were the north cargo bay of the airport, which is located in Fulton County, Georgia.
It could be a best-case scenario for a tornado hitting an airport — no injuries, minimal damage and no major disruption of air service, according to the airport.
