CALMAR, Iowa (KWQC) – A remarkable storm photo taken in rural northeast Iowa shows that even the weakest tornado can be highly destructive.
The twister that touched down Monday, May 15, 2017, on farmland near the town of Calmar registered as an EF-0, meaning it barely qualified as a tornado with only 65-85 MPH winds.
But that was enough to lift a 2×4 piece of wood and fire it like a torpedo into the side of a concrete silo.
“I’ve never personally seen anything like it before,” said Winneshiek County Emergency Management Coordinator Sean Snyder, who posted pictures of the silo damage to his agency’s Facebook page.
This same storm system also caused wind and hail damage to other structures in the area.
