FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. (WEAR) — The storm that damaged several Fort Walton Beach-area neighborhoods last week was the result of a tornado.
Just after 6 a.m. on Wednesday, June 21, an EF-0 twister skipped through a two-mile stretch, according to the National Weather Service.
The winds, estimated between 65 and 85 miles per house, impacted homes in Fort Walton Beach and Ocean City.
Most of the debris is gone and has been replaced by contractors making repairs.
Channel 3 spoke with one homeowner who said his damage was significant.
“I heard this terrific noise and I looked over and the kitchen ceiling had completely fallen down on top of everything,” explained Bobby Coppock.
The city of Fort Walton Beach says damage in the city alone is more than $350,000, but acknowledged that is a preliminary estimate and it’s probably far higher.
