VERONA, N.Y. — A tornado touched down Friday afternoon in Oneida County, yanking trees from the ground and snapping utility poles.

Meteorologists have confirmed a tornado hit an area southwest of Verona near Vernon, the National Weather Service announced Saturday morning. The tornado ripped through the area just before 5 p.m. Friday, the weather service said.

The storm broke seven utility poles on Route 365 about 5 miles southwest of Turning Stone Resort and Casino. Roofing was ripped from at least one building and dropped across hundreds of yards.

The tornado did not mark the end of stormy weather this week in Central New York.

Scattered thunderstorms are possible Saturday afternoon. There is a chance the thunderstorms could be severe.

After Saturday, the Fourth of July weekend is expected to be clearer.

CNY was not the only region struck by a tornado on Friday.

A tornado touched down along County Route 107 in Broadalbin, Fulton County at 3:49 p.m., the weather service confirmed. Broadalbin is about 50 minutes northwest of Albany.

The tornado demolished a pole barn, tossed snapped trees 150 feet into the air and hurled a carport into a tree, the weather service said.
