A waterspout over Humboldt Bay made its way onto land on Thursday, Jan. 25, turning it into Eureka County’s first tornado since 1998, the National Weather Service said.
The waterspout developed around 4:40 p.m. and moved its way through the Woodley Island Marina, dissipating about a minute later. Security cameras captured the waterspout blasting through the marina as it made its way towards land.
As soon as the waterspout hit land, it technically turned into a tornado, according to the NWS Eureka’s Twitter page. This is the Eureka forecasting area’s first tornado since the Fort Bragg tornado on Dec. 5, 1998. The Eureka area includes Mendocino, Del Norte, Humboldt and Trinity.
The damage reported from the incident was minimal.
