NEW HAVEN, Ill. — Last week’s predicted storms, for most of the Tri-State, came to not much more than heavy rain.
The National Weather Service, though, determined a tornado briefly touched down in White County, Illinois, after inspecting the damage.
On the evening of April 3 an EF-1 tornado touched down 5 miles northeast of New Haven, Illinois, and continued for 2.25 miles. The tornado was 225 yards wide and reached estimated winds of 110 mph.
Tornadoes are judged in strength on the Enhanced Fujita scale, with EF-0 being the weakest tornado and EF-5 being the strongest. An EF-1 tornado means winds were between 86 and 110 mph and is classified as “weak.”
No injuries were reported, but some damage to farm equipment was reported. Three barns lost metal roofing, and dozens of trees were snapped or uprooted.
