ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. – A tornado has been confirmed in Rockingham and Guilford counties on Sunday as storms moved through the area.
A tornado was confirmed at about 5:30 p.m. near the Rockingham County community of Monroeton and in Guilford County prior to that, according to the National Weather Service.
Both counties had been under tornado warnings, but both warnings expired on Sunday evening.
The tornado warning has since moved to Pittsylvania County and Danville, Virginia until 6:30 p.m.
Authorities did not say if the tornadoes confirmed in Guilford and Rockingham counties are the same tornado, but both are part of the same system.
There are more than 8,000 people without power in Forsyth County and more than 6,000 people without power in Guilford County.
There have been numerous reports of trees down, including one that fell on a car on Cone Boulevard in Greensboro.
A tree also toppled in a Winston-Salem neighborhood on Sunday, closing a road and knocking out power.
