First tornado of the season in Oklahoma sets a record

BUFFALO, OK. (KOCO)—- KOCO First Alert Field Meteorologist Michael Armstrong captured Oklahoma’s first tornado of 2018 on camera near Buffalo, Oklahoma.
A tornado warning was in effect for the area until 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

This is quite unusual, the previous record for the latest tornado in Oklahoma was April 26, 1962.

Oklahoma averages 56 tornadoes a year

The only years with zero tornadoes in the month of April are 1987, 1988, and now 2018.

On average, Oklahoma sees 21% of it’s annual tornadoes in the month of April and this year, not one tornado in April.

Now the month of May can be quite active. The state on average receives 41% of it’s annual tornadoes in the month of May.

The most tornadoes recorded in a single year for the state is 145 tornadoes in 1999.
