NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Norfolk Fire and Rescue says it responded to several reports of a possible tornado that touched down in the area of the Ocean View Golf Course Sunday morning.
The tornado has not been confirmed, but the region was under a tornado warning at the time.
10 On Your Side’s Tamara Scott spoke with golfers who were on the course at the time. Some say they were standing under a shelter next to a tree to wait out the rain when the tree began to fall.
Many tell 10 On Your Side they walked away with minor cuts and bruises. The property damage is estimated in the thousands.
“It’s something that I couldn’t imagine. I tell you there were some lucky people today,” said Dean Muncher, who was golfing at the time.
PGA Professional Andy Giles tells 10 On Your Side the moment was very scary. “It’s was just sheets of water and wind. It just came up so fast that, how do you prepare for something that just pops up like that? You can’t prepare for it. You do the best you can and handful everything turned out alright.”
WAVY also received numerous images of waterspouts in Norfolk earlier in the day Sunday.
