INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) – The National Weather Service has confirmed that nine tornadoes hit the state Saturday evening.
Just after 7 p.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service office in Wilmington, Ohio confirmed one tornado that created damage to rural areas of northern Union County and another tornado that caused damage in Fayette County.
Reports say a tornado caused damage to a church in Bentonville, Fayette County.
Just before 3 p.m. Sunday, Greene County EMA confirmed that Center Township in Eastern Greene County was hit by a tornado.
According to Center Township Fire Department there have been 70 homes damaged and three destroyed. They say there are several mobile homes with severe damage and about 900 without power.
The National Weather Service reports the F-2 tornado with winds between 120 to 130 mph hit near Crowe Road off Indiana 54 past near the Ridgeport Community and traveled east to Lawrence Hollow Estates.
According to a Sunday morning message from the NWS Twitter account, an EF-1 tornado struck Beech Grove with wind speeds of 100 mph Saturday. The Beech Grove area also experienced a second tornado, which was reported an EF-0 by the NWS.
The other four confirmed touchdowns were near Freedom in Owen County, north of Ellettsville in Monroe County, Richmond in Wayne County and on the south side of Rushville in Rush County.
The NWS office in Willminton, Ohio says the tornado in Richmond caused damage to the Richmond Mall.
Beech Grove Mayor Dennis Buckley told Eyewitness News Sunday morning that the city was hit around 7:40 p.m Saturday.
All residents are accounted-for and there were no injuries.
One family of four sought shelter overnight at the high school, according to Buckley, but other displaced residents likely sought shelter with other relatives.
Buckley said the city will try to clear roads first, then deal with power outages as cleanup continues.
The high school on Hornet Drive sustained significant damage, the the science academy portion of the building was destroyed.
Four more possible tornado strikes will be assessed starting on Sunday as teams from the National Weather Service plant to start in Freedom and Bloomfield and work their way to the east.
