ALMA, Kan. (WIBW) — The National Weather Service confirmed four tornadoes swept through the Flint Hills region Thursday evening.
While most of them were short-lived and didn’t cause any damage, one of them lasted nearly 20 minutes and reached triple digit wind speeds.
The twister touched down shortly after 8:30 p.m. about 8.75 miles northeast of Alta Vista. It cut a nearly seven-mile long path before ending approximately 4.3 miles west of Alma.
In that time, the tornado damaged several barns and trees along the Illinois and West Branch Mill Creeks, in Wabaunsee Co.
The NWS has currently rated it an EF-1, however that may change after a final review.
