PHOENIX — A tornado appeared to have touched down north of Phoenix amid heavy thunderstorms Monday afternoon.

A Facebook video shows swirling clouds and a funnel forming toward the ground in the New River area.

The National Weather Service said it could not yet confirm that the tornado had touched ground but was looking into it.

The weather service issued a tornado warning for Cave Creek, Carefree and Camp Creek that lasted through 12:45 p.m.

The apparent tornado was part of a long day of wind, rain and hail in the Phoenix area that were expected to continue through Tuesday morning.

Some areas north of Phoenix received more than 2 inches of rain, with 2.56 inches falling near Lake Pleasant by 2 p.m.

Parts of the East Valley also received more than 2 inches. Apache Junction was hit with flooding that resulted in at least five water rescue calls Monday morning.
