JACKSON, Miss. —
A tornado briefly spun up and touched down Wednesday morning in west Jackson.
A debris ball registered on radar about 7:20 a.m. on Highway 80, near I-220. Hinds County EOC Director Joey Perkins said the National Weather Service confirmed the small tornado came out of nowhere.
Perkins said NWS in Jackson believes it touched down around Highway 80 and South Drive and continued north-northeast through parts of the Queens neighborhood.
Trees and power lines were down in the area. A large tree limb blocked Queen Julianna Lane. There was also damage reported on East Hillsdale Drive, Queen Christina Lane and near Hawkins Field.
Perkins said the EOC has had reports of five houses damaged and a reported gas leak on East Hillsdale Drive.
A resident in the Queens neighborhood said she heard trees snapping as the storm moved through. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
“It was scary. The wind was blowing and trees were coming down,” said Queen Juliana Lane resident Katrina Allen.
Entergy reported about 300 customers were without power after the storm.
The National Weather Service did not issue a tornado warning. Some areas of the metro were under thunderstorm warnings as the front moved through Wednesday morning.
