CORNING, Calif. — Tuesday property owners are sizing up the damage from a tornado that touched down in Tehama County Monday afternoon. Two tornadoes were confirmed by the National Weather Service, but only one of them resulted in reports of property damage.

The first tornado was reported around 1:30 p.m. Monday west of Corning. The twister knocked over a shed and downed trees along Apple Road in the Henleyville area, about 8 miles west of Corning.

Sgt. Andy Houghtby, who is the coordinator for the Tehama County Office of Emergency Services, surveyed the damage Tuesday morning. Staff with the National Weather Service will assess the damage to determine the strength of the tornado.

A second tornado touched down around 2:40 p.m. Monday near Vina. It was in an open field and did not cause any damage. The National Weather Service said because there was no damage, that tornado is classified as an EF0.

In the Northern California service area for the National Weather Service in Sacramento, there were 39 tornadoes reported between 2010 and 2020. That averages about four tornadoes a year.
