NEAR MOUNT VERNON, Mo. — The National Weather Service confirms a tornado from Sunday night’s storms in Lawrence County.
The EF-1 twister hit two miles southeast of Hoberg around 8:04 p.m. Hoberg is just south of Mount Vernon. The tornado damaged a home, two ski boats, four outbuildings, an irrigation system and uprooted several trees.
The path of destruction is about a mile long. The tornado stretched about 75 yards wide.
The tornado hit Lee Belle’s property off of County Road 2155 the hardest. He and the neighbor across the road say they did not have any warning. And they did not expect a tornado in January.
“I was in the back bedroom and I heard a real loud roar,” said Lee Belle. “And all of a sudden the house started shaking and vibrating. Then I heard a bunch of big bangs outside and because I used to live in Kansas and experience tornadoes I thought, that sounded like a tornado.”
Thankfully, no one was hurt. Crews cleaned up large trees blocking the road. Residents here just have some cleanup of their own to do.
