The tornado that struck the town of Federal, WY on Sunday was an EF-2 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, according to the National Weather Service. An EF-2 has winds between 111 and 135 miles per hour. In addition, the NWS determined the Federal tornado had a width of roughly 500 yards.
The NWS said the tornado initially began a half mile north of Federal and moved south until lifting roughly a half mile south of Federal. As the severe thunderstorm moved to the northeast the tornado reformed numerous times before finally lifting permanently just to the east of Interstate 25 near the Whitaker exit.
The tornado stayed mostly over open countryside, but did damage or destroy eight structures in and around Federal. No injuries were reported.
