It was a pretty wild start to the week in southwestern Saskatchewan yesterday afternoon as a severe weather system moved through the area.

A tornado watch was placed on the region by Environment Canada around 3:30 p.m. and stuck around for about three hours before being rescinded.

Alysa Pederson, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said she couldn’t confirm as of late last night whether a tornado did touch down in the southwest, but she did say they’d received calls about the wild weather.

“We have received a few reports of two separate possible tornados,” the Edmonton based meteorologist said. “One of them was an earlier report around 3:30 p.m. local time just to the north of Swift Current and then around 4:30 further east closer to Chaplin we did receive a report of another tornado.”

Pederson said they will gather as much information on the two potential tornados in the area and check to see if anyone has any damage in the area before confirming whether a tornado took place or not.

“The storm moved through the area kind of east of the sandhills, north of Swift Current, then eastwards through Herbert and Morse, and then Chaplin,” she explained.

Environment Canada isn’t expected to make a decision on the potential tornados until Tuesday at the earliest.
