National Weather Service confirms EF-1 tornado hit Suffolk

(WWBT) – The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF-1 tornado hit Suffolk yesterday.

The NWS office in Blacksburg will survey the damage near the area of Gladys/Red House in Campbell County. Two structures and a camper were reported damaged, along with multiple trees down and debris in the area. No injuries were reported.

The storm passed through the area around 4:30 p.m.

“Our teams will be meeting with the National Weather Service as soon as possible to assess the extent of the storm and to reach out to those who have structure damage,” said stated Campbell County’s Director of Public Safety, Tracy Fairchild, in a release. “We are certainly thankful that no one was injured. As always, we encourage residents to be prepared for any severe weather during spring and summer months, as systems can change rapidly, as we’ve seen today.”

The NWS will survey the damage on Monday.

A second possible tornado was reported near the City of Suffolk around 6:45 p.m. where trees are reported to be down.

At that time, the National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for Suffolk, Norfolk and Chesapeake.

According to reports, a total of 14 homes and 6 businesses were damaged.
